04.07.2022 - Take a stroll. What is soberly described in online dictionaries as "slow, leisurely strolling" takes on a special meaning in Schönau Palace. There, "lust" and "wandering" seem to flow together not only into one word, but also into an idyllic painting of a unique region. An ideal place for meetings, functions and events of all facets in a pleasant balance of nature and history.

Unfortunately, the castle park was closed when I arrived (during the weekday around noon).

The original castle was built in the 11th century as a fortress to protect the newly settled Bavarians. During the second Turkish siege in 1683, the moated castle was assigned to the surrounding population for protection. However, nothing remains of the original building. Remnants of walls on the outside of the orchard probably date from this time.

Today's Schönau Castle was built on the site in the years after 1796.

The entire castle property is owned by the Sequoia Private Foundation. In the castle grounds, there are restored guest apartments in the historic hunting lodge. Guided tours of the remains of the Temple of Night were also offered. The park was rented by the Erde Nakula village renewal association "so that it remains accessible to the public". After tenancy disputes with the administrator Michael Kremsner, the Nakula association withdrew from the lease. The park is now no longer accessible to the public, but only to the house guests in the hunting lodge.
