The history of the Gambarana area has always been conditioned by the proximity of the Po; once it flowed further south, leaving space for a large and historically very important center, Sparvara; and also the current hamlet Cambiò was a remarkable place, as on the other hand Gambarana itself. In fact, among the branches into which the counts Palatini di Lomello, lords of western Lomellina until the twelfth century, divided themselves, two of the main ones bore the names of Sparvara and Gambarana.

The popular tradition, also reported by some historical-tourist guides of the area, states that the toponym of GAMBARANA derives from the emblem of the counts of Lomello, who later became counts of Gambarana, who had a shrimp and a frog as main emblems, in function " talking "with the toponym.
