Crucifixion tree or cross tree: a tree that indicates a boundary or intersection. Such trees could have different functions: as a place of justice, a sacred place or a boundary marker. Stones or trees were often used on the communal ash trees in the eastern Netherlands as marking points from which the fields could be divided. The Kroezeboom will have been planted for that purpose on the es of the Marke near Fleringen, probably between 1500 and 1600, as a 'loakboom' or markeboom.See also: bomeninfo.nl/kroezef.htmI was in this place before; at that time there was no fence around it (see the photos from that time. To protect the tree, a fence has been placed around it.
