The Salzwedeler Tor is the only well-preserved of the four former city gates. It was built in the 16th century and was an important part of the city fortifications. The two mighty battery towers that precede the gate are 9 and 18 meters in diameter. In 1907 the gate was opened by Prof. Dr. Otto Stiehl reconstructed. So is u. the stepped gable above the gateway has been carefully recreated according to old models. From 1991 a general repair was carried out and in 2013 the large bastion was extensively renovated.

In the 16th century, Gardelegen was surrounded by a city wall with four main gates: the Salzwedel Gate in the north, the Stendal Gate in the southeast, the Magdeburg Gate in the southwest, and another gate. Today, the Salzwedel Gate is the only completely preserved city gate. It was built in 1565 and reconstructed in 1907 under the direction of an architect, with the stepped gable above the gate entrance being faithfully recreated. The Stendal Gate is only partially preserved, while the Magdeburg Gate was completely demolished. Remains of the medieval city wall are still visible in Gardelegen.
