Always wanted to visit this one instead of cycling past it so often. Super nice and recommended tour along a beautiful windmills along the beginning of the Rotte. Afterwards at the sign it becomes a ditch (!). You can continue cycling and after 200m over a piece of grass/gravel/heirloom back onto the asphalt towards the Bentwout. Or from the other side of course towards the Rotte and cycle all the way to Rotterdam itself. Great to do with the road bike too!

The river Rotte arose 4500 years ago in this area due to the flooding of the peat layer in a wadden region. The sea was able to enter through a number of stream holes, depositing silt and turning the area into a swamp. Then, due to climate change, peat formation started and the west of the Netherlands became one continuous peat area. The water made its way back to the sea through the so-called peat streams. The Rotte is one of these. Because the peat was used as fuel (peat), the landscape changed into water plains. These were later drained again, creating polders.
