A place of Catholic worship and today the seat of the European Ecumenical Center for Peace, the Shrine of Our Lady of Europe was built here with the support of the Archbishop of Milan Giovanni Montini (later Pope Paul VI) because this place was considered the hydrographic center of 'Europe, a little in the middle between the Rhine, the Danube and the Po. It was consecrated on 14 September 1958.

The work, called by Don Re Vergine delle Vette, initially remained in Casatenovo, welcomed by the enthusiasm and admiration of all the citizens. In 1956, after various negotiations with Don Re, the Ministry of Defense sent a company of Alpine engineers to Campodolcino.

After a thorough inspection, Pizzo Stella was rejected as the summit was not suitable to house the statue. The unanimous decision was to give up Pizzo Stella and fall back on the summit of the Serenissima, where, on 15 October 1957, the Madonna appeared in all her majestic beauty.

An altar, a crypt dedicated to the European soldiers who died in the last world war and a large staircase facing the Casa Alpina di Motta have been positioned next to the monument. Don Luigi Re, who died on 14 April 1965, was buried in the center of the Sanctuary.

Following the interest aroused throughout Europe, the name of the statue was changed to: Virgin of the Peaks, Our Lady of Europe.

The monument was inaugurated in September 1958 by H.E. Monsignor Giovanni Battista Montini in the presence of the Alpini promoters of the Casatenovo group, representatives of the Army and civil and religious authorities.
