The north-south axis of the building dates from the 9th-10th centuries. century
The princely Stahemberg crypt, previously used as an ossuary, is probably the oldest church in Wartberg. Records show that the actual Michael's chapel was located where the mortuary with the southern apse is now located.
The late Gothic part north of it, the Dionysus chapel, was added to it in 1508 and is still incorrectly referred to as Michael's chapel.
