The museum is housed on the site of a former Poor Clares Monastery, Convento de Nossa Senhora da Assunção (Our Lady of the Assumption), founded in 1518.Built between 1519 and 1550, the monastery has a beautiful double-storey Renaissance-style cloister (very rare: the blunted corners). In the cloister traveling exhibition are regularly shown. You can visit the courtyard during the opening hours of the municipal library.In the museum interesting archaeological finds from Ossonaba and Faro, Azulejos and numerous paintings are shown. The art collection of Ferreira d'Almeida in the monastery chapel contains silver work and faience as well as paintings by Dürer, Rembrandt, Gauguin and Toulouse - Lautrec.

This museum, housed in the outbuilding of the Santo António church, was founded in 1934. The entrance portico from the Renaissance is originally from the Compromisso Marítimo church. Local artists created the iron gate, which was specially fitted.
