The Johannis Church is the oldest church in Schwanebeck and was built around 1150 in what was then the village of Schwanebeck. The landlord of the village, which existed as Büblingen next to the town of Schwanebeck until 1830, was the Georgenberg monastery near Goslar.
The church became Protestant in 1556 with the arrival of the Reformation. The Johannis Church was the secondary church in the association of the town and village of Schwanebeck and served as the main church when the St. Peter's Church could not be used.
The church was rebuilt in 1669. The tower was removed and replaced by the roof turret that still exists today. During this reconstruction, most of the stones were used for retaining walls on the north side of the church. In addition to a three-sided gallery, the church received an apse in the east.
During the last reconstruction in 1701, Pastor Georg Müller donated the altar, and the south side of the church received larger windows. The west wall of the church is currently leaning and would need to be supported.
The church does not have an organ. In the 1880s, a harmonium was installed, financed by donations. Regular services are not held; it is used for funerals, weddings or baptisms.
