Sebastian von Pappenheim, the imperial hereditary marshal of his time and lord of Wespenstein Castle, personally introduced the Reformation in 1525. Five years later, the forefather of the Reformation, Martin Luther, paid a visit to the town and the church. On Maundy Thursday in 1530 he preached at St. Marien.
In 1915/16 the baroque interior of the church was redesigned and given an Art Nouveau version. The church is under monument protection.A special attraction is the burial place of the von Pappenheim family under the altar of the church. The Gothic crypt dates from the 15th and 16th centuries and is the oldest part of the church. The paintings on the walls are very well preserved to this day.
