The Plaza de San Juan de Dios in Cádiz was the city's former main square and was also known as "La Corredera". It was located outside the city walls near the former “Puerta del Mar” access gate. The gate today bears the name “Arco del Pópulo”.

Since the square was once at the mouth of an inlet, it has an irregular shape. The square facing the harbor was a center of city activity and trade in the 16th century. Exotic products that ships brought from overseas arrived here.

At the end of the 18th century, the square was equipped with permanent stalls. A market hall was later built.
