In Roman mythology, Neptune, who was honored with a fountain here not far from the famous Lake Geneva, is the god of the sea; his Greek counterpart is Poseidon. Both are usually depicted—in paintings or statues—with a trident, which is, so to speak, their shared trademark. Unlike his Greek counterpart, Neptune has a planet named after him.
