The natural lake is a local recreation area for the residents of the surrounding area and serves as a fishing lake for the fishing association. Swimming in the lake is permitted at your own risk, which is why the lake is also monitored by the health department as bathing water.
The lake was created in part of the former slate quarry for the Frommern "desert oil extraction plant" of the Third Reich. Precipitation and groundwater currents have filled the excavation pit. Because the water exchange in the lake only takes place via precipitation or the groundwater flow, the water level can fluctuate.
The lake has a surface area of approx. 8,500 m², a depth of approx. 1.5 m in the middle of the lake and up to 5 m in the steep shore area. The average water volume is approx. 25,000 m³.
Due to the relatively small volume of water, the natural lake is susceptible to pollution from humans and animals (dogs, ducks, etc.). Heavy rainfall can also cause waste and other contamination from adjacent meadows and paths to be washed into the lake and thus lead to a significant deterioration in the water quality.
