During the First World War, German mountain fighters of the 4th Mountain Division, the Enzian Division, were set up in the area. The hiking trails on the Heersberg is still called Muliweg, because the soldiers had to use this steep Albaufstieg with their mules almost every day during their training. A memorial stone on the high plateau of the Heersberg commemorates the Muliweg and the Enzian Division.
