Sanatorium Brestovac was opened on May 22, 1909 as a health resort for lung diseases. Milivoj Dežman, a doctor, writer and journalist, initiated the construction out of love for his wife actress Ljerka Šram, who died of tuberculosis in his arms. The land was donated by the landowner of Šestine, Miroslav Kulmer, and the construction was financed by the city of Zagreb through the organization of events, lotteries and the sale of paintings. The sanatorium was in operation until 1968, when it was closed, and at one time it became a real small town. It had its own bakery, shop, cinema, library, volleyball and bowling alleys, even a pigsty where they were raised for the hospital.

The children attended school until the 4th grade of primary school in the sanatorium where the teacher also lived, and the older ones were taken by the van to the city school every day. The bus transported patients every day, and the truck brought food. Brestovac was a modern hospital with the first X-ray, and in one period its own radio.

During World War I and World War II, the hospital treated soldiers, and it has its own dark side of the past. In May 1945, a partisan detachment liquidated 200 patients of the NDH army and spared personnel to treat the partisan wounded. The forest around Brestovac still hides the bones of those killed, and it is planned to mark the place of liquidation.

Brestovac is also the site of the paranormal. The building is said to be haunted by the ghosts of the dead, the ghost of an unfortunate actress, or the ghosts of executed wounded soldiers, while the basements hide underground passages and catacombs and who knows what other secrets.

Few ghosts here and there, but they are very shy and timid. Nothing to worry about. :)
