The fire in the Lüneburg Heath destroyed in August 1975 in the Lüneburg Heath and Wendland over 8000 hectares of forest, moor and heathland. In the largest fire disaster in the Federal Republic of Germany so far, seven people were killed. The forest fires in the rural districts of Gifhorn, Celle and Lüchow-Dannenberg were nationwide for over a week the main news in newspapers, radio and television news.
