The Begijnhofkaai in Geraardsbergen is a historic location with a rich history. The quay was constructed in 1869 and is located between the “Oude Brug” on the Grote straat and the “Tweede Brug” on the Wijngaardstraat. The name refers to the former beguinage, which was already mentioned in the 13th century and was demolished in 1880.
In 1986, remains of the beguinage were uncovered during work. This beguinage was founded in 1245 along the Dender. The area around the Begijnhofkaai has undergone various changes over the years, including the demolition of the Sint-Janskapel in 1877 and the Sint-Margaretabegijnhof in 1880 to make way for the construction of the Rijksmiddelbare school.
