In 1817, farmer Jacques Leurs and miller Willem Evers began building a mill on the Muyenberg, later called "Mussen- or Muizenberg" (sparrow or mouse mountain).
The mill was bought second-hand in Germany. It was probably built around 1750.
The appearance of de Hoop is striking: it is the only sixteen-sided slate-clad mill in Europe. In 1934, "Dekker wings" were installed, an invention of the mill builder A.J. Dekker. The blades of the wings were covered with metal, which was placed around the blade at the front and attached to the blade grille, tapering towards the back.
