The Bergmannskreuz on the Exelberg was built in 1866 by Marpinger citizens as a place of commemoration and worship for those comrades who had died in the course of their dangerous occupation. During refurbishment of the plant in 1959, the earthworkers found a fragment of a stone cross. It was a cross of thanksgiving, erected after the great emergency of 1699, and bearing the following inscription: "This cross is erected in honor of the bitter suffering and death of our Lord Jesus Christ." It is a matter of honor for the living members to maintain this facility. The current high cross was created in 1971. Since 1982, a pulley with a hoisting rope and a coal car decorate the system. As part of the "coal culture days in Marpingen" a pit tunnel was rebuilt above the Bergmannskreuz and inaugurated on 08.August 1999.

“Each of these crosses can tell its own story and what prompted people to erect “their” cross at this point. (...) These wayside crosses were erected as visible signs and attract the attention of many people. The cross is a symbol of life. It stands as a sign of our Christian hope and wants to direct our gaze to Jesus Christ, who has overcome death (...). The cross is part of our life as it was in the life of Jesus.
So I wish that many people … visit the crosses, whether as places of stillness and breathing space before God, whether as places for community gatherings, prayer and praise to God.”
