The chalk tower was an outwork of Hocheppan Castle, a defensive and lookout tower that secured the eastern access routes.

65 m below Hocheppan Castle, on a ridge towards the Adige Valley, a lonely tower rises in the middle of the forest. It is the square chalk tower, with walls 1.5 m thick, belonging to the castle above. Like the entire complex, it also dates from the 12th or 13th century. At that time it was surrounded by a ring wall, and it was also provided with a kennel, a small outbuilding and an entrance at a height of 12 m on the south side. There is only a dark shaft inside.
The chalk tower was an outwork of Hocheppan Castle, a defensive and lookout tower that secured the eastern access routes. Later it was used to ignite signal fires. These fires were called chalk fires, derived from the term "chalk" for warning: This also explains the origin of today's name chalk tower. Remains of another outwork of Hocheppan Castle are probably the walls with notches at the nearby Unterhauser Hof. The Eppan castle hike also leads past the chalk tower.
