The Oldengaerde estate, located in the historic village of Dwingeloo, includes a house, gardens and even a forest, all of which have been declared a national monument. In 2004, both the house and the gardens in their entirety were designated as a national monument. Originally, Oldengaerde was one of eighteen port states in Drenthe, of which only seven are now left. Oldengaerde is one of the most beautiful and best preserved port areas. The estate is both literally and figuratively the center of Dwingeloo.
