The Fort bij 't Hemeltje was built around 1880 and is named after a former farm/inn. The fort was part of the second circle of fortresses that had been pushed forward around Utrecht. It secured with its artillery a high strip of ground from the Houtense Vlakte and the railway from Den Bosch. The fort had a ground cover bombproof barracks, gun depots and a fort guard's house.
