It takes a long time to get up there, leave early... at the fort there are all the posters that explain its history, interesting...

The Leone Fort of Cima Campo is an imposing and beautiful work of the First World War which was part of the Italian Brenta-Cismon barrier: in line with the nearby Fort of Cima Lan and with the opposite Fort Lisser of Enego, it dominated the passage of the two valleys and defend the border with the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Specifically, Forte Leone had the task of beating the mule tracks that went up from Valsugana to the Asiago Plateau, as well as providing fire coverage throughout the surrounding area for a radius of 12km.

In practice, however, it did not participate except marginally in the Great War, because at the beginning of the conflict the Austro-Hungarians retreated to the upper Valsugana and then, with the Strafexpedition, moved the front to the Asiago Plateau; being far from the front line, the fort was disarmed.

It had a brief operational role in November 1917, to cover the retreat of the Italian units following the defeat at Caporetto: but it was completely undefended and instead of the cannons black painted trunks were placed, to deceive the enemy... once the little ammunition, the soldiers also defended themselves with stones, to allow precious hours for the retreat of the royal army and the reorganization on Grappa! In the end it was conquered by the Austro-Hungarians, who partially made it shine at the end of the war.

Built between 1906 and 1912, it was a modern, majestic and expensive military work: battery with 6 cannons and observatory in a revolving armored dome; 17 machine guns for close fire; barracks for 400 men; powder magazine in separate structure; moat with drawbridge, surrounding walls and concrete perimeter trenches.

In addition to the demolition carried out by the retreating imperialists, it suffered the fate of most Italian forts: dismantled first by the fascist regime and then by the salvagers, to recover the metal.

Today the fort, restored by the Municipality of Arsiè, can only be visited with a guide, by appointment (tel. 3519010135):

Forte Leone, built between 1906 and 1912, is located at a good 1,500 meters on the Cima di Campo. The fortress used to be one of the largest and most important armored works in Italy on the northern border with Austria-Hungary. It is just over a kilometer away from what was then the Tyrolean border. At that time Leone formed a unit with the fortresses of Cima Lan and Lisser.
