Immediately on the Dortmund-Ems Canal is a remainder of the old Hanekenkanals which originally led from Hanekenfähr near Lingen to here and later on in the Dortmund-Emskanals. The technically interesting coupling lock as a descent to the hare has been preserved.

A very nice path right on the rabbit. Not so busy. Rather unsuitable by bike.

Before the Dortmund-Ems Canal was built, there was already the Hase-Ems Canal. This was built between 1824 and 1828 between Hanekenfuhr (near Lingen) and Meppen to avoid the many meanders of the Ems. It was about 25 kilometers long, 16 meters wide at water level and 1.5 meters deep.
Below Meppen, the Ems was considered navigable at the time.
Four locks were built along the old canal.
Around 870 m of the old canal has been preserved here near Meppen, which is now used to drain the seepage water from the Dortmund-Ems canal.
There is a Kneipp pool, a barefoot path and seating right next to the old lock.
