Around 1479 the Order of the Holy Cross founded a monastery in the center of Brüggen. The members of the order were also called Kreuzherren. A year later, the monastery church of St. Nicholas was built. After the church burned down in 1751, it was rebuilt as a baroque church. The other monastery buildings also partially burned down in 1751. The convent building, which is still preserved today, was built in 1756. From 1630 to 1794 the order maintained a philosophical and theological faculty in the monastery for the education of its members.

Today's monastery church of St. Nicholas is the replacement building, built between 1479 and 1484, for the St. Nicholas Chapel, which had a bell tower and was destroyed in 1473. The successor was built as a brick hall building and a so-called city church in the style of the mendicant order churches. In 1751 the originally Gothic church burned down, but the outer walls remained standing. By 1756 it was rebuilt as a baroque hall church.
