One Theodoor Smeets and his wife Sofia Beunen thought - or hoped - that their son would become a miller. So in 1870 they build a windmill. But my son didn't like that and the mill was sold. A descendant of a well-known miller's family came into possession of the mill and baptized it "De Hoop" because he had pinned all his hopes on the mill and the business around it. And it went well. He even came up with a new blade system that worked so well that more than 300 mills started using it. After having had a few more owners, the mill was shut down. Today it is a monument with a unique architecture, namely the octagonal gallery. You can read about this and more, such as the future of the mill, on the information board.
