A far less known, but by no means less significant, Franciscan shrine is the Church of Rivotorto. You can easily integrate them into the route on a walk from Santa Maria degli Angeli back to the upper town, further up the Assisi visitor then also reaches San Damiano.

The Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Rivotorto (Santuario del Sacro Tugurio di Rivotorto) is located a few kilometers outside of Santa Maria degli Angeli and was built after the earthquake of 1854 in place of another building in neo-Gothic style to protect the Franciscan accommodation inside the church. This is the ruins of a hut in which St. Francis often sought shelter with his brothers, making it the first place of residence for the brotherhood around Francis of Assisi. Since 2000 it has been part of the Italian Unesco World Heritage Site as a memorial site.
