Along with the Wendelsteinbahn, the Drachenfelsbahn and the Stuttgart cog railway, the Bayerische Zugspitzbahn is one of four cog railways still in operation in Germany. The meter-gauge route leads from the Garmisch-Partenkirchner district of Garmisch to the Zugspitze, the highest mountain in Germany.

Hiking

Personally, I would recommend taking the cable car up to visit the Zugspitze - and down the cog railway. Both have their charms. The ride on the Zahradbahn takes a while, and it could happen in changeable weather that you can no longer see anything above. The tickets can be combined.
