The most severe flooding of the Oder in the 20th century in the Oderbruch occurred in the spring of 1947. On the night of March 22, on the evening of March 21, floating ice formed an ice barrier near the flood channel near Küstrin-Kietz. Ice dislocations also formed north of Reitwein. This dammed up large amounts of water within a short time. In the morning of March 22, 1947 at 1 a.m. the Oder dike near Reitwein was finally flooded. The top of the dyke was washed over by the water in two places over a length of more than 100 meters. Areas of the dyke crest about 300 meters wide and one meter deep were quickly destroyed. The flood even reached Bad Freienwalde (Oder), several kilometers from the river, where the main post office building in the city center is located, where a memorial stone is located today. More than 20,000 people became homeless at the time.
