Tips

  • The Marienkirche is located in the center of Wesenberg, in the middle of the landscape of the Mecklenburg Small Lake District. Next to the castle, the church is the oldest building in the city and was built from boulders and bricks.

Construction began as early as 1250, the nave with its vaults dates from the second half of the 14th century. and the ring wall of the chancel and the base of the tower also date from this period.
Already in 1337 the church is mentioned as completed.
In 1529 the first evangelical pastor came to Wesenberg and the Reformation found its way here as well.

During the great city fire in 1706, the church also burns and all 5 bells melt, the clock is buried under rubble and the organ is damaged. Only the walls and the vault remain, and so the reconstruction of St. Marienkirche in Wesenberg begins as early as 1707, and the vicarage is rebuilt in 1708.
Until 1996 it is now built, restored, a small, a large bell hung and a new clock bought and some work done on the roof.

The Wesenberg church is linked to a legend that wraps around the chain on the northern entrance door. This chain has no beginning and no end and it is believed that after a dispute between the city fathers and the local blacksmith, the devil himself forged this chain. Even today you can marvel at "The Devil's Chain" from all sides.

  • Not far from there we reach St. Mary's Church, built in the 13th century, but unfortunately closed due to illness.
Next to it is a natural monument, the huge old court linden tree, around 600 years old with a circumference of over 8 meters.
    An impressive tree.
