The Church of Santa Cruz or Old Cathedral is the temple with the longest history in the city and tradition has it that it was built on the site of an old Muslim mosque. It was built at the request of Alfonso X el Sabio and was erected as a cathedral in 1263, since the Wise King had expressed his desire to be buried in it, although this did not happen.

The Church of the Holy Cross is a Roman Catholic church in the Spanish city of Cadiz. It was the Cathedral of the Diocese of Cadiz y Ceuta between 1602 and 1838 when the new Cadiz Cathedral was completed.

The Church of Santa Cruz is located near the Cathedral in the El Pópulo district. The building, also known as the »Old Cathedral«, is the oldest sacred building in the city. According to tradition, the church was built on a site where a Muslim mosque originally stood. Commissioned by King Alfonso V, the cathedral was consecrated in 1263.

Initially, the Mudéjar and Gothic style church had a handmade roof and three naves. After renovation in 1572, the stonework burned down in 1596 as a result of a Dutch raid. As part of the reconstruction work in 1606, the building was expanded. Tuscan columns and round arches were added.

The heart of the church is the baroque main altar made of gilded wood.
