The fact that you can cross the border here (almost) unnoticed is thanks to the Schengen Agreement, which was initially signed between Germany, France and the BeNeLux countries at the border triangle (Saarland, France, Luxembourg). Germany, France and the BeNeLux countries therefore play a very important role in Europe as we know it today.
From here you can easily get to Schengen on the Moselle. Very nice there too.
