Wherever you look in Willemstad, there are colorful houses everywhere. This goes back to the governor Albert Kikkert (1761 - 1819). Around 1815, he ordered that the houses be made more colorful and painted brightly. He claimed that the white facades gave him migraines because they strongly reflected the intense sunlight, so he had all the houses painted brightly.
