The Galgeplaat and Slikken van den Dortsman in the Oosterschelde are an important place for birds and seals. However, the flats and mudflats have become increasingly smaller since the construction of the Oosterscheldekering and other flood defenses. This also results in less flow and dynamics. Sand is washed off the plates, especially during storms. Because there is insufficient tidal action, less sand is returned to the flats than is lost. By adding sand (supply), the Galgeplaat and mudflats are preserved as an important place for birds and seals and they protect the adjacent dike against the waves.
