Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery is located on the former castle grounds of Kemmel Castle. The cemetery dates from December 1914. Due to the Kemmelberg, a strategic height in the warfare, the village of Kemmel suffered greatly. The cemetery remained in use until the Spring Offensive in April 1918 when the site was taken by the Germans. The cemetery was later recaptured during the last offensive in September 1918.
In the meantime, the cemetery had been badly damaged by the bombings.
This cemetery contains the graves of 1027 British, 80 Canadian, 1 New Zealander and 23 Australians.
