Mitte Combined Heat and Power Plant Braunschweig

The generation of energy from coal is stopped. This is made possible by modernizing the generation facilities: The coal-fired thermal power station, which produces electricity and heat at the Mitte location on Hamburger Strasse, will be replaced by a biomass thermal power station using waste wood as the main fuel, in combination with a gas turbine thermal power station. In addition to the two new plants, the third important pillar remains a flexible gas and steam turbine plant, which, together with the local heat storage tanks and the close-meshed and efficient district heating network, forms an ideal starting point for modern generation.

The Braunschweig cogeneration plant Mitte is a combined heat and power plant operated by Stadtwerke Braunschweig.
There has been a coal-fired power plant at the site since 1924, which was last renovated in 1986. Built in 1983-84, the 198 meter high chimney, popularly known as "Langer Heinrich", is the tallest building in Braunschweig.
By means of combined heat and power generation, an electrical output of 78 megawatts is generated, the thermal output is 330 megawatts.
Up to 400 t of coal can be burned daily, which is delivered via the Braunschweig port and the railway.
In 2018, it was decided to phase out coal-fired power generation, which should take place by the end of 2022.
For this purpose, a biomass thermal power station with the main fuel waste wood will be built.
In 2011, a gas and steam turbine system with 77 MW electrical and 69 MW thermal output was put into operation.
The steam turbine was supplied by Siemens.
The generator voltage is 10.5 kilovolts.
The grid connection takes place via the substations Hasenwinkel and Nord Zelle at the 110 kV high-voltage level in the grid of the distribution grid operator Braunschweiger Netz GmbH.
The Mitte power plant produces around 35% of the city's electricity and 85% of its district heating needs.
