The previous building was a memorial chapel from the 11th century. According to tradition, King Otto I held a court day here in 938. This chapel was replaced by a small late Romanesque church around 1360. A side aisle was added to this building at the end of the 15th century and a tower in 1790. The building was demolished in 1870.
The three-aisled stone basilica was built from 1870 to 1873 according to plans by August Rincklake and under the construction management of Caspar Clemens Pickel. The building stands in early Gothic forms on a cruciform floor plan. The built-in west tower was built instead of the originally planned two-tower façade. The centralizing east building with a massive, octagonal, domed crossing and a six-sided choir has a picturesque effect. The crossing turret is decorated with an imperial crown in memory of Emperor Otto. On June 8, 1989, the Laurentius Church was added to the list of monuments of the city of Essen.
