To the west of the exhibition halls - between the former airport tower in the north and the underground station Messestadt West or Willy-Brandt-Platz in the south - is the 390 m long and 46 to 94 m wide exhibition lake with a water surface of 2.6 hectares It is divided in the middle into a northern and a southern part by a dam running towards the main entrance. The street "Am Messesee" runs along the dam as an extension of Joseph-Wild-Straße, it is used as a route for taxis during trade fairs. The lake falls from the dam to the north over one sheet pile wall and to the south over two sheet pile walls, so that a continuous flow of water is achieved. In the resulting pools there are three water fountains that are in operation during the summer months. At the northern end, the water runs into a seepage basin filled with stones. The banks are partially overgrown with reeds. The two-part installation Gran Paradiso by the Munich artist Stephan Huber from 1997 stands in the water in front of the entrance to the fair.

      Control Tower / Tower
The eight-story control tower was placed under monument protection in 1995 and stood free in the exhibition area of the city of Munich with a floor area of 14,000 m2 until 2016. Various attempts to put the former airport tower and its surrounding open space to good use failed in 1995, 2006 and 2009.
In 2016, the tower was rebuilt with a modern office complex. On July 11, 2017, the new BRAINLAB headquarters was inaugurated by Federal Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel will be officially opened. The historic tower is the eye-catcher of the office complex. (flughafen-muenchen-riem.de)
