In 1335 the Komutov market was freed from customs duties and taxes by a king's privilege. The city was on the important road from Halle/Leipzig to Prague. Brewing rights, rights to hold weekly and annual markets promoted the status. In October 1396 the Teutonic Order granted town rights. The city received a town hall, the right to trade in salt, a city weighbridge, as well as a seal and city coat of arms.

The museum represents one of the most valuable collections in the Czech region and was created by the German population of the time.
