At 2,941 meters, the Hochkönig is the highest massif in the Berchtesgaden Alps. On the summit floor lies the Übergossene Alm, a crevasseless plateau glacier that descends to around 2,600 to 2,700 meters. In 1888 the glacier area was around 5.5 square kilometers. In the meantime, the Übergossene Alm has melted down to less than 1.5 square kilometers.
