Legend has it that this is the hunting lodge of Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa. The castle site shows only a few post holes in the rock. On the north side of a rock chamber and a rock-cut staircase can be seen. Wall remains are completely missing. The castle Backelstein is led as a knight stone number 220. The inscription in the rock reads: Backelstein - early medieval wooden castle.
