Forest entrepreneur from Eslarn saves Our Lady

Forest entrepreneur from Eslarn saves Our Lady

The depiction of Mary as the Mother of Sorrows with the body of Jesus is still on Tillyplatz after 130 years

eslarn (gz) The first houses in Eslarn already existed according to documentary mention in the 13th century. In the house chronicle of local researcher Josef Hanauer, the neighboring properties on Tillyplatz with house numbers 7 (formerly 53) by Wilhelm Hummer, number 9 (55) by Johann Kugler and number 11 (57) by Jesser Matheus were first mentioned in the 17th century.

Until the 21st century, the owners changed more often. In 1937, Luise and Karl Bauriedl (Balzerkoarl) bought house number 7, and set up a drugstore there. Therese and Johann Baier (Schmiedhanser) took over number 9 in 1901. Property 11 belonged to Josefa and Simon Meckl in 1919 and Margareta and Albert Meckl in 1952. Klaus Blei, leaseholder of the "Heistodl", later bought the Schmiedhanser house.

Around 15 years ago, forest entrepreneur Josef Meckl acquired the two vacant neighboring properties. "In the Balzerkoarlhaus, the water meter was still installed in the chimney, and when it was turned on, the water sprayed out of the old pipes and shut-off valves," Meckl recalls. The two houses were in such a terrible state that ten years ago the only option was to tear them down. With the purchase, the entrepreneur was able to expand his farm, and by assigning areas, the community was able to widen the narrow Heubachgasse. The AWO day care center was built on the remaining area.

Before the demolition, Meckl brought the figure of Mary that had been on the gable of the Schmiedhanser house for 130 years to safety. According to Josef Meckl, a note appeared in the base of the "Mater Dolorosa" with the body of Jesus Christ taken down from the cross, mentioning the former owners Josef and Barbara Baier.
