Remains of the city fortifications are clearly visible on the "Schorren". The Lords of Zimmern and Rieneck built their castle on this rugged, approximately 30-meter-high rock plateau in the High Middle Ages and were able to secure their rule in the Grün and Wittigbach valleys from there.

The rock face known as "Schorren" (an old German word for "rock") below the castle wall provides an interesting geological "outcrop" into the local geological history.
