The building, designed in late Gothic style, was built in the 15th century as the court church of the Roman-German emperors under Frederick III and was elevated to the rank of cathedral church in 1786, when Graz became a bishop's seat. The sacred building, originally intended as a church fort outside the medieval city walls, stands on elevated ground between Bürgergasse and Burggasse. The cathedral, together with the neighboring imperial mausoleum, the castle and the theater, forms the ensemble of the Graz city crown.
