The core of Willershausen Castle is a former moated castle, the beginnings of which date back to the 13th century. The mighty tower, a part of the moat and the remains of the castle rampart have been preserved from the old water fortress. The Treusch von Buttlar family crest can be seen on the half-timbered building of the residential building. After the death of the last von Buttlar, the castle was inherited by two daughters in 1757, so Gut and Wasserburg came to the married von Kutzleben and von Bibra families. From 1889 to 1992 the landgraves of Hessen-Philippsthal-Barchfeld owned the property. A farming family from Upper Bavaria has been the owner since 1992. In addition to the agricultural and forestry business, holiday homes and apartments are also offered today. gut-willershausen.de

The moated castle, with its castle and moat, was built in the mid-13th century. The covered foundations give an idea of the dimensions of the complex, which has undergone many transformations. The old manor house (documented since 1591), with its multi-story half-timbered structure on a fieldstone foundation, has been preserved to this day. Other features include enchanted towers and parts of the moat and wall. The estate is now used as a holiday resort, and behind the castle is a game reserve (Hirschgarten).
