The weir is around 700 meters above the Leibstadt railway station, where the Rhine used to split and flow around an island in the Au. The five-barrel weir closes the entire southern main course of the Rhine, with the three southern openings on Swiss territory and the two northern openings on German territory. The northern tributary was redesigned to become the headwater channel of the power plant. The Auhof island in between became a reservoir.
