The Hofgut Geilweilerhof was formerly owned by the Cistercian monastery Eusserthal. The estate was first mentioned in a document in 1184, since then it was burned down during the Palatinate Peasants' War, came into the possession of the Electoral Palatinate, became a national estate after the French Revolution when the Palatinate belonged to France and was then auctioned off.
After that, the farm frequently changed owners until August Ludowici, a brick manufacturer, bought it in 1895 and expanded it as a model business. This is also where the striking tower came into being, which can be seen from afar and is often used as a photo motif. After his sons died in World War I, Ludowici bequeathed the Geilweilerhof to the district government of the Palatinate in 1925 with the condition that a vine breeding station be set up there. From this point on, new grape varieties were bred here, one of the first new varieties was Morio Muskat, one of the most well-known varieties from the work of the JKI (Julius Kühn Institute). Later, from the 1970s, more research was carried out into fungus-resistant varieties. The most well-known result of this research is certainly the red wine variety Regent.
