The 5th of August is a memorial day in the Catholic Church, called "Mary of the Snows" because it refers to a snow miracle, according to which Mary appeared to a childless couple and, out of gratitude, wanted to make the Mother of God their heir and promised the Pope that a church would be built on the spot where there was snow on that summer morning. The Pope found the spot, ordered the construction of the church, and the couple paid. The Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome was also consecrated on the 5th of August, in the year of our Lord 432.
