The new Erfurt–Leipzig/Halle line, alternatively also the Erfurt–Leipzig/Halle high-speed line, is a section of the Eltersdorf–Leipzig Hauptbahnhof high-speed railway line opened in 2015, which was planned and built as part of the German Unity Transport Project No. 8. Halle (Saale) is connected via the Planena–Halle-Ammendorf route (VzG route 6394), which is part of the project.

The entire route is also a section of the Berlin-Munich high-speed connection and axis no. 1 (Berlin-Verona-Palermo) of the Trans-European Networks[5] and the east-west axis between Dresden and Frankfurt am Main. The Berlin–Halle and Leipzig (VDE8.3) railway lines, which have already been upgraded, connect to the north, and the Nuremberg–Erfurt high-speed line (VDE8.1) section to the south, which went into operation in December 2017.
