The two ponds are located near Bad Sachsa, west of the district of Neuhof, and were created by the monks of the Walkenried Cistercian monastery from the 12th century. From the car park at the crane ponds in Neuhof, a nature trail - hiking trail - leads around the upper and lower crane ponds and the remains of other ponds.

Because of their closeness to nature, the ponds are now part of the nature reserve "gypsum karst area near Bad Sachsa", which extends in several sub-areas from Tettenborn to the Thuringian state border; In addition, the area is part of the Natura 2000 network of protected areas.

Charcoal algae thrive in the clean, calcareous water of the ponds. The still waters also offer good conditions as part of the habitat for crested newts. The marsh harrier also lives in the watery landscape near Neuhof and can be observed from time to time.

Small detours from the path lead to special features of the area: to the Kranichstein quarry, where raw gypsum stone has been extracted since the beginning of the 20th century, to a historical gypsum kiln and to the natural monument Prieststeinhöhle, a shallow cave in the gypsum of the Kranichstein.

The lower crane pond is about 300 m long and 130 m wide, the upper crane pond about 150 m long and 200 m wide.

Both ponds are a true fishing paradise: in addition to trout as the main fish, anglers can look forward to eel, pike, carp and tench

A natural idyll that is easy to reach not far from Neuhof. Benches offer the opportunity to rest and observe nature. In summer, however, you should think about mosquito repellent in the evenings.

Beautiful circular paths around the ponds, at least you can see swans.
